Traditional architectures of Kerala

Influences on Kerala's architecture came across the seas, from far flung regions of the world, especially South East Asia and the Pacific Rim stretching up to China. These external influences are visibly manifested in Kerala's architecture with its gabled roof and all wood, coconut frond thatched constructions.
The most remarkable emblem of traditional architecture is the "Nalukettu", the ancestral homes fo feudal joint families known as "Tharavadu". With gabled roofs and carved wooden walls, the Nalukettu is flanked by out houses and utility structures. The "Padippura"(a gabled gateway) serves as the entrance to the walled compound. This pattern of architecture became a standard feature of feudal Kerala.
