Pazhassi Raja--Battle for independence

The shooting of Pazhassi Raja, directed by Hariharan, scripted by M T Vasudevan Nair and produced by Gokulam Gopalan began on May 9. The pooja ceremony of the film was held at Chennai Prasad Studios, attended by many. The film narrates the story of a battle for independence.

The film brings back Hariharan, Nair and Mammootty after a gap of 18 years, the last being Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha.

When contacted Hariharan said, "We felt that Pazhassi Raja had not got the recognition it deserved, especially outside Kerala, for his contribution to the freedom movement. The 1857 Sepoy Mutiny is considered the first freedom fight, but Pazhassi Raja fought the British 50 years before that, in the jungles of Wayanad. My film is about how he fights the British by organising a tribal force in Wayanad and how he gives up his life for the cause."

Kanihaa plays Pazhassi's wife. Padmapriya, an actress of substance, plays a tribal opposite Manoj K Jayan. of the leading ladies The film also has Tamil actor Sharath Kumar, who is making his debut in this film, plays the commander-in-chief of Pazhassi Raja. Other casts include Jagathy Srekumar, Urmila Unni and many others. Venu handles the camera.
The film also has artistes from Hollywood and Britain.
