As strong sea waves lashed a string of coastal hamlets in Alappuzha district, 160 families were shifted to rehabilitation camps opened in the Amabalapuzha area.
The district administration was monitoring the situation closely and, if necessary, more rehabilitation camps would be opened to shift the affected families, official sources said.
Strong sea erosion was reported from Cherthala, Omassery,Thottappally, Purakkad and Arattupuzha, the last one hit by the tsunami two years back.
Traffic on the coastal road came to a halt and sea walls broken in some places.
