Delhi traffic cop sacked for raping minor

As the rape of a minor girl here sparked an outrage, a Delhi traffic police constable accused of the crime was today dismissed from service and the national capital's Police chief Y S Dadwal summoned by a Parliamentary Committee to discuss the safety of women. Constable Sanjeev Kumar was sacked after he was arrested along with his friend and property dealer Naresh Kumar for allegedly raping a 11-year-old girl in an Outer Delhi locality yesterday.

Police claimed Sanjeev has confessed to his crime and a charges of kidnapping and rape have been pressed against him.

The Parliamentary Committee on Women's Empowerment, headed by Congress MP Krishna Tirath from Delhi, sought a detailed report from Commissioner Dadwal on the cases of crime against women in Delhi in the recent past and the action taken by police.

This was the second incident of rape of a minor girl in a speeding car in Delhi this month.

"It is indeed a matter of concern that there are cases of crime against women in the national capital on a daily basis. We summoned the Police Commissioner to ask him whether the police have put in place any mechanism to deal with the situation," Tirath told PTI.

"The committee has asked the Commissioner to come back within a week with a detailed report on the number of cases of crime against women in Delhi in recent months and what action the police has taken in these cases," she said.

Tirath said the shocking case of the rape of the girl figured prominently in the meeting and Dadwal informed the panel that Sanjeev was sacked from service.
