College Kumaran's story revolves around Mahatma College and Kumaran who runs the college canteen for over ten years. The movie revolves around the story of an ex-military officer named Kumaraettan (Mohanlal) who is forced to take up the job of a college canteen supervisor maintained by his family for years.

A chronic bachelor, Kumaraettan is a close friend of all college folks. The college students seek his advice in almost all matters, including personal issues of love. He is so much admired by the college students that they include him in all major college events and tours. But there is someone in the college who hates him a lot. Madhavi (Vimala Raman), the college's history professor, hates Kumaraettan as she feels that he is the major reason behind the students getting pampered.

This is Tulasidas' second movie with Mohanlal after the comedy film Mr Brahmachari. Poduval agrees that the theme came to mind as they were discussing Mohanlal's earlier films like Sarvakalasala and Sukhamo Devi, which were campus-based and are still cherished by the audiences of all ages.
