Pothen Vava tells the story of the relationship between Pothan Vava (Mammootty) and his mother Vakkeel Amma, and promises to have an ample dose of action, humour and melodrama. She has the guts and will power of a male. Pothan Vava will do anything that she asks him to do. Pop star, Usha Uthup, enacts the role of Vakeel Amma.

Advocate Kurishummoottil Mariamma is known for her versatile rhetoric and volatile temper while in court. Her only son is Vava, a proud and arrogant brat who looks after the family farm when he is not engaged in fisticuffs in the neighbourhood. Though he is the village bully, in front of his mother he is as tame as a house cat, and never does anything against her wishes.

Gopika plays the female lead and rest of the cast includes Nedumudi Venu, Samvritha Sunil, Kunjan etc. TV comedy artist Biju Kuttan plays an important role in this movie.
