The Indian Navy has called applications from unmarried men who have passed Plus Two to join the Naval College of Engineering, Lonavala, Pune, and the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), Kochi, through the Plus Two (Technical) Cadet Entry Scheme for a career as officers in electrical engineering and naval architecture branches.

Entry qualification is Plus Two or equivalent examinations with at least 75 per cent marks in aggregate in physics, chemistry and mathematics and 50 per cent marks in English either in class 10 or 12.

The candidates should be aged 16.5 to 19 (born between January 2, 1990 and July 1, 1992).

The minimum height required is 157 cm with correlated weight as per age. Eyesight: distant vision 6/12, 6/12 correctable to 6/6, 6/6 with glasses. Application format and other details can be obtained from the May 24 issue of Employment News, or www.nausena-bharti.nic.in.

Filled applications should be sent by ordinary post to Postbag no. 04, R.K. Puram P.O. (Main), New Delhi - 110 066, to reach the addressee on or before June 25.

Selection will be on the basis of Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews for short-listed applicants, to be held from July to December in Bangalore or Bhopal.

The interviews last five days, consisting of stage 1 (first day) and stage 2 (four days). Stage 1 has intelligence and picture perception tests and group discussion.

Those who clear this test are eligible to appear for stage 2 consisting of psychological tests, group task tests and interviews. Successful candidates will undergo a special medical examination. Candidates will be paid return sleeper-class train fare, if appearing for the first time. The training will start in January 2009.

The selected candidates are taken as cadets and undergo a 16-week naval orientation course at the Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala. Some of them will be selected for nomination to the B.Tech. course in naval architecture and shipbuilding in Cusat. Others will undergo a four-year engineering course at the Lonavala college. The cadets will be allotted engineering or electrical branch. On passing the course, the B.Tech. degree will be awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University. The Navy will bear the cost of study and training. Cadets are provided free clothes and mess. After B.Tech., the cadets will be deputed for a six-month course in warship design at Visakhapatnam followed by an 18-month postgraduate diploma course in naval architecture at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

The cadets can enter the Navy in the sub-lieutenant cadre and rise to the rank of captain.
