Mammootty, a beloved icon of Malayalam cinema, is known not only for his versatile performances but also for his empathy and protective nature towards co-actors. Actor Biju Kuttan recently shared an incident from the sets of the 2006 film Pothen Vava, where Mammootty stepped in to defend him when a dance choreographer treated him disrespectfully.
Biju Kuttan recounted the episode:
“During the song shoot of Pothen Vava, I had to stand behind Mammootty while he delivered his lines and clap in rhythm. However, I realized my positioning seemed irrelevant to the scene, so I simply stood still. The choreographer, annoyed, said to me, ‘Why are you standing there like a dead body? Do something.’ Mammootty noticed this and didn’t like it.
He called the choreographer over and asked, ‘Do you know who he is? He’s not someone you can talk to like that. He’s an actor working alongside me.’ The choreographer was taken aback and from then on treated me with respect. Mammootty ensured that no one on set was mistreated. That day, I realized how much Mammootty values the dignity of his colleagues.”
Biju Kuttan also spoke about Mammootty’s meticulous and caring nature:
“Mammootty is strict, but that’s necessary. He notices even the smallest details. For example, if I eat with the crew, he’ll ask, ‘Why did you eat there?’ He calls out anyone who doesn’t greet him in the morning, making sure discipline is maintained on set.”
Directed by Joshiy, Pothen Vava featured Mammootty, Nedumudi Venu, Usha Uthup, and Gopika in pivotal roles. The film, produced under the banner of Lal Creations and distributed by Lal Release, remains memorable for its engaging storyline and performances.
This anecdote has resonated with fans, further cementing Mammootty’s image as a mentor and protector both on and off-screen.
