Leading Mobile Operators Collaborate to Enable Rich Mobile Web Services

A leading group of mobile operators today unveiled a new initiative to create a blueprint and roadmap for opening up mobile functionality to encourage the development of exciting mobile applications without compromising customer security. The new initiative will be known as BONDI.

Supported by the OMTP members including 3 Group, AT&T, T-Mobile, Telenor, Telefonica, Telecom Italia and Vodafone, BONDI will provide a consistent and secure web services interface that can be used by all web developers across multiple device platforms. This will provide the opportunity for web developers to address a mass market of consumers and to drive the use of data services on mobile.

BONDI will harmonise the various open and proprietary ongoing initiatives and this cooperative work will minimise the potential for technology fragmentation in this exciting area. BONDI, under the OMTP umbrella, will contribute towards ongoing standardisation work to help create a new rich web experience for mobile while also ensuring an appropriate degree of protection that will maintain the current high level of trust by mobile phone users.

BONDI will expose key handset features to web developers to help them develop more function-rich, user friendly and relevant applications. The new handset software will be engineered in such a way as to prevent fraudulent and malicious activity through unauthorised access to functions or sensitive personal information.

Tim Raby. MD OMTP commented, "Users have to be certain when they use the mobile web that their privacy is paramount. The OMTP goal is to 'enable and protect' - to enable fantastic new services whilst at the same time protecting the user."

Christian Salbaing, Managing Director, 3 Group said "High speed mobile internet access has been a key component of 3's flat rate mobile internet strategy. The development of smarter mobile devices and services is an important step in that strategy and BONDI is key in enabling this to operate across a wide variety of handsets. It also ensures we can provide the necessary security to protect our customers."

Hank Kafka, vice president, Architecture for AT&T's wireless unit said, "With a tradition of offering the most cutting-edge devices in the U.S., the potential to deliver innovative new services to our customers is vast. AT&T is committed to offering the newest and best services, while also protecting our customers and the wireless experience."

Arnd Gallmann, Senior Vice President Terminal Technology at T-Mobile International added: "Keeping a lid on fragmentation, whilst at the same time enabling new functionality, will encourage more developers to create unique, exciting applications for mobile web 2.0. In turn, this will improve the mobile broadband proposition and greatly enhance the customer experience."

"Mobile Web 2.0 is an exciting opportunity; the potential for advancement is huge." said Carlos Melendo, Senior Manager Handsets at Telefonica. "We at Telefonica, are looking forward to seeing BONDI help bring the mobile web close to the capabilities of the PC web."

Luca Tomassini, Executive Vice President Innovation & Business Development for Telecom Italia's domestic mobile unit, said "With Industry initiatives such as BONDI, Telecom Italia will be able to deliver innovative services to customers and operators will offer web developers a new path to develop innovative technologies for the mobile broadband experience"

Commenting on the latest initiative, Reinhard Kreft, Vodafone's Head of Standardisation and Industry Engagements, said, "With so many diverse mobile devices and operating systems available in today's marketplace, it can be quite challenging to roll out consistent and compelling new services across such a broad spread. BONDI addresses the need to deliver great services across multiple platforms, whilst ensuring that customers are protected from any risk associated with adopting a more open approach to these systems."

"A really simple way for developers to create rich mobile services & applications, combined with the required security and trust by the parties in the provisioning of them, could really boost the mobile web 2.0", concluded Stein Hansen, Vice President Group Strategy at Telenor. "BONDI is an important step in that direction."

Sistema to launch services by April '09

Russian telecom giant Sistema, which recently acquired a controlling stake in India's Shyam Telelink, on Sunday announced launching its nation-wide mobile services by April 2009. It also said that a capital investment of Rs 4,000 crore will be made during the current fiscal on rolling out the network. Sistema-Shyam is the first company among the new players to get CDMA spectrum in 13 circles and it hopes to get the radio frequency in remaining ones soon to become a pan-India operator.

Sistema also announced its plans to participate in the auctioning of 3G spectrum as and when the process starts.

The $9.6 billion diversified group is considering to increase its stake in Shyam Telelink to the maximum permissible limit of 74 per cent in the next two months, its First Vice President (Strategy and Development) Anton Abugov said.

"We shall be starting 3G mobile services as and when radio frequency was allocated," he said.

The company had earlier paid over $58 million to take a 51 stake in Shyam, which has fixed line and CDMA mobile services in Rajasthan under the brand name of Rainbow.

Sistema has set an ambitious target to register its name among the top five players with 60 million subscribers by 2017 and in the process it may look for acquiring stake in more companies, Abugov said, adding that "we are aiming to become (among) India's top-5 mobile telecom operator organically and via mergers and acquisitions".

DoT warns Blackberry service providers on security system

Having come under scanner for security lapses in the use of Blackberry services, the government has issued a stern warning to telecom companies to put the required security system in place within 15 days or stop the services. The directive has been issued to the respective service providers to work out with officials of Blackberry licensor Research in Motion (RIM) of Canada to provide full-proof security system in the country, senior officials in the Department of Telecom (DoT) said.

If the services were stopped, over four lakh users of Blackberry would not be able to use this premium service which enables users to access e-mail in the form of SMS.

The DoT Secretary had recently said that the government was keen to resolve the matter at the earliest.

When contacted RIM, licensor of Blackberry services, spokesperson told PTI that RIM operates in more than 130 countries around the world and respects the regulatory requirements of governments. RIM does not comment on confidential regulatory matters or speculation on such matters in any given country.

Telecom Minister A Raja had also said that security of nation was of paramount concern and this would not be sacrificed at any cost.

C-DoT, a technical wing of DoT, has the monitoring capabilities provided the licensor puts the server in India enabling interception of contents of e-mails, if required, on the Blackberry handsets.

Nokia blames fake batteries for explosions; gets COAI support

Nokia, the world's largest maker of mobile handsets blamed fake batteries and tampered cell phones for explosion in its mobiles, while advising that customers must always use original components.

"Every single incident is being investigated and almost all cases where explosion took place involve either fake batteries or their phones were tampered. We are doing our best to educate our customers about the disadvantages of using counterfeit accessories," D Shivakumar, managing director of Nokia India, said here.

The company's reaction follows after some incidents of Nokia mobile phones exploding were reported from states such as West Bengal and Gujarat in the past few days.

The Finnish company, which mustered support from the Cellular Operators Association (COAI) and Indian Cellular Association (ICA), also assured that all cases involving replacement of batteries covered under product advisory of August 14 would be resolved in the next 10-15 days.

COAI, a lobby of private GSM cellular players batted for Nokia, saying only in cases of counterfeit products such incidents were happening and sought government's intervention to protect consumers from using fake accessories.

"A mobile is as safe as any other consumer electronic device used at home. However, consumers need to be mindful and should follow steps advised by the manufacturers to ensure safety of their cell phones and longevity of the batteries," COAI director general T V Ramachandran said.

ICA also favoured rationalisation of duty structure for accessories. A fake battery is available in the market for as less as Rs 10 only compared to Rs 200 for an original mainly due to duty difference, ICA president Pankaj Mohindroo said.
