Anjuruli

For an encounter with the raw power of nature-bewitching and awesome- Anjuruli is a great weekend get away from blaring car horns and screeching brakes, the silence punctuated only by crickets and bird calls, animals greeting the dawn, the sounding cataract, a vast expanse of water - all make for a breath-taking experience.

Anjuruli is three kilometers from Kanjiar on the Kottayam-Kattapana route. Board any bus to kattapana, alight at Kanjiar and trek to Anjuruli- for the forest road here is not motorable. Take help from the tribals here to reach the waterfall. Once here, forget the rest of the world. The verdant greenery is a cool sight for sore eyes tired by the grime and visual pollution of chaotic city life.

The snowy white gush of waters through the forest green is a sight to dream of, not to tell. The water here is stored for the Idukki hydro-electric project comes from Erattayar river, traveling a distance of nearly 24 Km. The best time to visit the place is one or two months after the rains. By then, a couple of country-made 'vallams' will be ready for a jolly good ride.

For those in quest of greater adventures, a trek up the towering mountain is advisable, encountering on the way wild elephants, snakes, birds of a thousand hues etc. but first, permission has to be sought from the Divisional forest Office at Kanchiyar for the trek inside the forest. Food and accommodation are available at Kattapana. But it is best to carry your own food.
