Kallummel Kallu

At Kallummel Kallu near Thookupalam in Idukki district myth reality are inseparably woven together. Myth has it that during the period of vanavasam Bhima with other Pandavas entered into a craggy place for a peaceful rest. As it was a hilltop, a kaleidoscopic view of vast expanses was possible and Bhima could take noticeof any intruder.

They spent a full day there. A vast rock in the shape of a coat (Kattilu Kallu) believed to be used by Bhima, is one of the major attractions here. The Kallummel Kallu (the place is known by this name) is an egg-shaped rock over a round figured one. It is believed that Bhima had crushed a big areca nut using the two rocks for his thamboolam.

Koompanpara temple situated 5 km away from Kallummel Kallu is another attraction. It is believed that Pandavas had prayed before the deity for an undisturbed passage through the forest. On the northern side facing KallummelKallu, a large single rock forms one of the four sidewalls of the temple.

Near Kallummel Kallu, a cemetery believed to be built by tribals long back, has been discovered recently. Large earthen pots and rusted remains of iron swords unearthed form nearby places are now under the possession of some private institutions in Thookupalam.

It takes ten minutes walk from Thookupalam to Kallummel Kallu. To reach Thookupalm, get into any bus plying on Kumily-Kattappana route. Alight at Puliyanmala. Taxis conduct regular services to Thookupalam form here. There are some private buses at long intervals. Lodging facility available at Thookupalam
